I am so blessed to know and work with such talented professionals like photographer extraordinaire Kristen Weaver! I know she is reading this with a little smile on her face (and a huge bucket of humility the size of her new WATCH!!!) Yes, Kristen- I THINK YOU ROCK! I can honestly say that photoshoots are hard, long and a little bit overwhelming BUT, the challenge of the creative is what drives me! I think the hardest part is waiting to see the final results......... (yes, I ask EVERY time "Did we get it?") Here are a few sneak peeks of Behind The Scenes of our most recent Miami trip.

Kristen wrote an eye opening and informative blog post today about When to book your Photographer! A Must Read! Talent is scarce and if you really want the best, you should ensure that you plan early (you know that other brides are doing it too.) What are you waiting for anyway?

Then I read the post that Lauren from Every Last Detail posted today! I have posted the first two paragraphs, but this is an informative article that you should read for yourself.

There’s a very common question that I hear from brides when they’re starting in on their wedding planning: “How early is too early to…,” or “how late is too late to…?” In regards to booking vendors, it totally depends on the type of vendor and your location. But overall, there is pretty much an order to stick to. It’s more a matter of vendors that book up quickly and trust me- the good ones book up fast!

1. Find and book your wedding planner. It doesn’t even have to be a planner for Full Planning- it’s just a good idea to meet with a planner to discuss ideas and get vendor recommendations. (At this time start looking for and researching vendors, particularly photographers)

Real #Weddings, Casey and Chris #Florida

This was the nicest family I could imagine working with. Casey is a sweet girl with an incredible attention to details. I knew from the minute I met her that she was on top of things and we were going to get along just fine. It wasnt until the wedding day that I met Chris, as they live in Ft Lauderdale and opted to have the wedding near family. Now I can honestly say that this couple was so precious!!!! You could tell that they were not only in love, but were best friends :-)

The venue was the lovely Lake Ashton in Winter Haven, where they could not have been more professional and fun. They went above and beyond to make the evening smooth sailing. The Master of Ceremonies was Kelly Suit of "A Premier Entertainment" who kept the party going all night long! There was not a guest sitting on the sidelines all night long.
Lovely flowers of hot pink roses, filled the room and topped off a cake that was a total hit! Thank you to KC Photography for the stunning images!

When I say that i have the most interesting and fun job, I can honestly say that I never know about destination wedding couples until they arrive in Orlando. This family gathered from all over the country, by way of Alabama for an intimate gathering of generations. I was blessed to dance with little girls dressed in spring dresses and Grandmothers with spring in their step!

Iced and potent, they are sure to keep the party going, providing the needed rocket fuel without missing a single beat. You’ll look back at your wedding and say, “I could’ve danced all night—and that’s exactly what I did!”

To get started, rim some test tubes or shot glasses with the peel of an orange and then dip the rim of the glass in chocolate shavings and some chili flakes. In a shaker filled with ice, mix the following:

1 ounce Vodka or Tequila (I prefer Tequila)
1/2 ounce Kahlúa Especial
1/2 ounce Tia Maria
1 ounce cold espresso
Shake well, pour and you'll keep going and going and going!!

They’re baaaack! Yes, the Fab Four (and I don’t mean the Beatles) Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda hit the big screen tomorrow in Sex and the City 2 for more girl talk, glamour and glitz. Expect intrigue, drama, romance and of course, a wedding!
Yes, two characters (and for those of you who don’t know who they are there will be no spoiler alert here) will tie the knot at a grand affair in Connecticut. Naturally, this wedding scene boasts an amazing cake and we have a sneak peek of this show-stopping masterpiece created by Ron Ben-Israel. Ron’s gorgeous cakes have been featured in Bridal Guide numerous times Here’s his 6-foot, 4-inch tall, five-layer Sex and the City 2 dazzling creation:

Yep, this baby took 50 hours to create and a staff of nine people to pull it all together. Even the cake stand was custom designed. Just take a look at the detail and sparkle of the chandelier-style Swarovski crystals:

There were approximately 4,100 Swarovski crystals used and they were all hand strung (no wonder it took 50 hours!). Ron said that his inspiration was a combination of things: a dress designed by Bob Mackie and worn by Mitzi Gaynor in her 1970s variety show and Klimt’s painting “The Kiss.” So, you may be wondering, how many guests would this cake serve? Answer: 485. And what would it cost? Answer: $32,000. OK, one can dream and it is for Sex and the City 2after all where over-the-top glamour and fabulousness is the norm. Have a great time at the movies and be sure to look for Ron’s cake in its starring role!

I am a total saver of memories! I have sweet letters all the way back to Jr High, and yes, i am a Yearbook scanner to this day (they are right next to my computer :-) In fact, i have a birthday ritual (that NOW takes me a LONG time, lol) that involves the pulling out of boxes and going through the special people and moments in my life. Photographer Kristen Weaver sent us this stunning styled inspirational photo shoot entitled The Greenhouse Effect. A selection of fantastic Orlando, FL wedding professionals collaborated to style and produce this green wedding photo shoot, featuring spectacular details in a palette of earthy greens and browns combined with crisp white, as styled by April Dorsey of The D-Tales. Photographed on locaction at a hydroponic greenhouse on the roof of the Roper Garden Building, Lee Forrest Design used carnivorous plants in the florals in addition to moss, orchids, artichokes and kale. Don't miss the cascading artichoke bouquet, the moss carpet or the million tabletop details, including jeweled tarantulas, porcelain cabbages, green glassware, bamboo-inspired china and wrought-iron flatware. We love the cake with airbrushed metallic detailing, accented by an artichoke, braided palm leaves and wiring created by Anna Cakes. Brides seeking wedding planning assistance generally fall into two categories:
Full Service Planner (”I’m overwhelmed, I don’t know where to start, I need all the help I can get!”) and
Day Of Coordinator (”I’m a hands-on kind of gal, I’ve got lots of help, I just need a little assistance along the way“). With the onslaught of wedding planning blogs, magazines, TV shows and books along with the downturn in the economy, more and more Day Of Brides are surfacing. Being a crafty, creative, practical, “hands-on” type myself, I can totally appreciate the Day Of Bride. But with this continuing emergence of the DIY wedding, there seems to be a bit of confusion about what “Day Of Coordination” actually means….

A Day Of wedding package means that the Bride is responsible for doing the majority of her own planning. In order for your Planner to do her job (and do it WELL), she needs to know every detail you have planned. No detail is too small here. If your Aunt Becky suddenly decides to sing a solo during the ceremony, the Planner needs to know. If you are considering including a sand ceremony with your vows or want to surprise your new Scottish family with a special bagpipe performance in the middle of dinner, the Planner needs to know that, too! A good Planner will be asking LOTS of questions about your planning, maybe even asking you to fill out some forms, but sometimes details can fall through the cracks. Communication is key.

There is actually no such thing as a “DAY Of” anything. Any reputable planner will tell you that she starts coordinating the final details of your wedding at least a month out. There are vendors to contact, coordination of deliveries, set-up, strike (that’s industry speak for break-down), confirming final payments, going over every little detail with a fine tooth comb to ensure nothing has been overlooked (and trust me when I say it happens…all the time!).

Is your Planner creating a detailed Itinerary for you, your wedding party and all your vendors? She should be. And that too, takes time. Scheduling all the “major players”, letting everyone know where to be and at what time. Contact names, cell numbers and emergency backup contacts can’t be gathered on the “Day Of”. It all takes TIME.

Trust me…you do NOT want a Planner who is just going to show up on your wedding day and make sure everyone is doing what they are supposed to be doing, when they are supposed to be doing it. Because what if they DON’T? What would she do then? And how would she even know? By then, it’s too late.

Price is important here, too. A smart, budget savvy Bride will get some references and call more than one or two Planners before making her decision. She also knows that pricing should not be the deciding factor when hiring any wedding professional. A good general rule of thumb is to “throw out” the highest and lowest priced Day Of Coordinators and focus on the one(s) in the middle. Coordinating your Day Of package could take upwards of 30 hours, so consider the time and cost associated with that. A ridiculously low price quote and my guess is that the Planner is not doing all she is supposed to be doing.

One more thing; more and more vendors (photographers, caterers, florists, rental companies) are telling me that they are “this close” to not taking weddings if the Bride doesn’t have a Planner. They are being paid for a service that most likely does NOT include lining up the wedding party before the ceremony, coordinating the dances or showing you how to cut your cake. Will they help you if you need it? Of course they will, because they are professionals who love Brides, weddings and helping you have the day you’ve always dreamed of. But given the choice, they’d much rather be able to focus on doing what you hired them to do, because they are good at what they do!

If you decide to go for a Day Of Coordination package, be sure you are asking the important questions of potential planners:

* When do you officially start coordinating my wedding?
* Are you willing to look over all my contracts to be sure I am getting what I am expecting?
* Will you be contacting all my vendors?
* What kinds of details will you be asking them for?
* Will you create an itinerary/timeline for me, my wedding party and my vendors?
* Will you be present for and coordinate the details of the rehearsal?
* Do you bring an emergency kit with you on wedding day?
* Will you personally take responsibility for personal items like the cake knife/server, toasting glasses, etc and make sure they get back to us at the end of the night?
* Will you stay until the VERY end of the reception, after we are gone, to be sure any last minute issues are taken care of?

Don’t be misled into thinking that a Day Of Coordinator will (or should) show up on your Wedding Day, magic wand in hand with nary a thought for the details prior to her arrival.

If you are paying more than several hundred dollars for a reputable Day Of Wedding planner, chances are you WILL get what you are paying for and you will NOT regret it! Especially when you have the stress free day that allows you and your family, the freedom to host this joyous event.

Hiring a #Videographer/ #Cinematographer for your #wedding

Looking for a videographer / cinematographer can be a very challenging task during your wedding. I am a HUGE fan of videography, as this is the only way I have to cherish family members who are no longer with us today. The fun and their words still move me 19 years later, something that is missing from my photos. The following tips can help ensure a much smoother process and reduce your stress significantly.
1) View the creators work. You should fall in love the their work. It may take a lot of your time to visit the various videographer / cinematographer websites, but you will be glad you did. You also want to create a list of your top 3 choices because your 1st choice may not have any dates available and you will find yourself having to start all over . You’ll save yourself a lot of time by doing this.
2) Contract. The more details in your contract the better. This protects both parties and provides concrete information and guidelines for what to expect and not to expect. . Here are a few things to make sure are in your contract:

Video Package – Make sure this is specified. Does it include a certain amount of DVDs? Are you restricted to a number of footage hours? Does it include the unedited footage & the edited footage? Are there categories on the DVD, if so what? Will the video be High Definition (HD) and/or blue ray?
Delivery Date – Be sure the contract includes a completion date and/or date for expected delivery.
Deposit – Does the videographer / cinematographer require a deposit? Most likely they will. The important part about this section is not to pay in full. Definitely provide a deposit, but definitely DO NOT pay in full. I made this very mistake. Paying them in full and not having a set date, leaves you with no video and no recourse.

3) Responsiveness. This is probably the most important item. The videographer / cinematographer level of responsiveness to you prior to hiring is a good indication of how they will be after you have hired them. If you find it takes them a while to get back to you, it could create a lot of unnecessary stress for you during and after the wedding. If you are willing to sacrifice waiting a very long time and poor communication for excellent work, just remember, it will cause you a lot of stress and grief.
4) Popularity. A popular videographer / cinematographer can be a good and bad thing. The good thing is people like their work because it’s probably really good work. The bad thing is they may be in high demand. It may be difficult to obtain a date from them and obtain your products on time. Also their clientele may include “important people”, so you may get bumped continuously and put to the bottom of their priority list as This process is supposed to leave you feeling important and happy, not unimportant and lost.

Here’s a creative table number wedding project that can be used to bulk up your centerpiece or as a stand alone item. Wedding table numbers come in all shapes and sizes, and we wanted to give them a little sprucing up from the typical table number holder and card stock (though there are some awesomely funky ones out there!) The candle light glows warm through the vellum paper and illuminates the table numbers!
Supplies Per Table

Fillable Cylinder Centerpieces (Small 7.5″)
1 8.5″ x 11″ vellum paper
1 Votive candle
2 Vellum Glue Dots
Paper trimmer
Printer
Table number templates (download here or create your own!)

Directions

Download the table number templates and print them out on the vellum.
Cut 1″ from the top of the vellum, creating a 7.5″ x 11″ piece of vellum.
Wrap the vellum around the glass, centering the number in the appropriate location. Then using two vellum glue dots adhere the vellum to the glass near the rim and the bottom.
Drop a votive candle in and light!

So during a wedding this past weekend, I got a panicked call from the MOB. Wouldnt you know it, the vendor "forgot" my phone number (after an email and 3 phone conversations! GRRRRR) and called the BRIDE.
Now the value of a coordinator is to handle all of these issues so there is not a single ounce of stress! The MOB did exactly what I instructed her to do and that was "CALL ME IMMEDIATELY, FOR ANYTHING". I was able to let her know that I was already handling the situation and "Enjoy the rest of the afternoon". Nothing like a hug from the Father of the Bride when you have never met in person!!!

So lets see what the thought is:

Vendors: What are your thoughts? Should you let it be known or just let it go? Who would you tell? If you do tell, when is the right moment to do do?

Brides: Do you want to know if something went wrong? When is the right time to tell you?

In celebration of Earth Day, i continue to look for ideas that are eco friendly and are unique. This one is so unique that I might just have to buy some seeds and get moving on it! Favors that give back are so much more relevant than many of the trinkets that your guests will never use.

Download the template for the cover and now the inside section.
Print the front of the matchbook covers onto 8 1/2-by-11-inch card stock. Turn the paper over, and print the page of instructions on the back (test the alignment by printing one copy first, before printing the rest).
There are three creases you'll need to make, and there are three sets of dotted crop marks to make it easier to do so. Use a bone folder and a metal straightedge to draw creases between the dotted crop marks.
Use a craft knife and the straightedge to cut out the matchbook covers, cutting along the edges of the colors.
Fold matchbook along creases.
Scoop seeds into 2-by-3 1/4-inch glassine envelopes, and fold top edge over twice by 1/4 inch. (I LOVE how you can look for "special meanings" to make the seeds all about YOU!
Tuck seed-filled glassine envelope into the bottom flap, with the folded edge down, and staple once in the middle of the flap.

Ive been seeing a trend, lately, of wedding parties, disneymooners, or trash-the-dress sessions doing things that involve getting into the lakes on Walt Disney World property. Many of these lakes have signs that warn against swimming in the lake, but I feel like many vacationers believe that the warnings are just for gators and other sharp-toothed critters, so dipping in the occasional toe or taking a quick swim is no big deal. Unfortunately, this is not the case.

Yes, it's true that there are gators in the lakes at Walt Disney World. However, just like the occasional gators you see at the resorts, these gators are probably trying to stay about as far from populated areas as they can, so you won't see gators rushing up the beach to eat the mickey-eared newlyweds standing at the edge of the water. I'm not going to tell you not to worry about gators while you're in Florida, because you should always be smart about being anywhere near wildlife, but I will tell you that they aren't your biggest problem when it comes to the lakes.
The biggest problem with Florida lake water is bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Not surprisingly, the water is filled with them. This is, of course, true of many freshwater lakes around the country, but Florida lakes have a special problem that has to do with the state's climate and it creates conditions that are dangerous, if not deadly.

One of the more notorious of these parasites is a microscopic creature called the naegleria fowleri amoeba. This amoeba lives in water that is warmer than 80 degrees Fahrenheit, so it thrives on the edges of Florida lakes where the water is warm. The amoeba is also more likely to thrive in water that has been stagnant, a condition that occurs in lakes when fresh rainwater isn't enough to compensate for droughts like the ones Florida has had in recent years.

Here's a quote from CNN about the amoeba:

The amoeba enters the human body through the nose. It then travels to the brain, where it begins to feed. Symptoms of the amoeba's rampage begin 1 to 14 days after infection and resemble the flu. At the onset of those symptoms the amoeba victim's health swiftly declines. At this point, says Dr. Kevin Sherin of the Orange County Health Department who is investigating three deaths this summer in Florida, "It's progressing very rapidly and then there's a downhill course for them there. Folks lapse into a coma, there are abnormal movements of the eyes and a terrible cascade of events leading to the actual death of parts of the brain."

How gross is that? It's not limited to just putting your face in the water either. Being close enough to the water to inhale any tiny droplets is enough.

People who have visited Walt Disney World for most of their lives may remember when lake swimming was common and encouraged at the resorts. Climate changes and a better understanding of the microscopic dangers in the water have changed this policy and now there is a strict don't-get-in-the-water policy at most of the lake areas. It's true that fishing is still allowed, but it's strictly catch and release. Part of this is because they want the lake to stay stocked, but another big part has to do with Disney not wanting to be responsible for the microscopic organisms you could be ingesting.

The whole brain-eating amoeba isn't the only thing out there. Here is a short list of the other things that experts warn Florida lake swimmers about:

Cryptosporidiosis: A diarrheal disease caused by a parasite that lives in human and animal intestines. The parasite can survive outside the body for a long time and resist chlorine disinfection. One mouthful of contaminated water can cause infection.
E coli: A strain of bacteria that causes severe diarrhea with bleeding and abdominal cramps. Primarily spread through uncooked meat, it can be contracted by swimming in contaminated water.
Giardiasis: A diarrheal illness caused by a parasite that lives in the intestines of people and animals. One of the most common causes of waterborne disease in the United States, it is contracted by mouth contact with feces-contaminated water.
Hepatitis A: Caused by a virus, this disease may be spread by contact with water contaminated with human feces or by people who did not wash their hands properly. Symptoms include fever, loss of appetite and nausea, although children younger than 3 may not have symptoms but can still spread the virus.
Leptospirosis: A bacterial disease that could include high fever, severe headache, chills and vomiting. Untreated, it can cause kidney or liver damage, meningitis and, in rare cases, death. Caused by exposure to water contaminated with the urine of infected animals.
Shigellosis: A bacterial disease that causes diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps and is spread by contact with fecal material.
Swimmer's itch: A skin rash caused by an allergic reaction to parasites found in birds and mammals that is spread by snails. The parasites are found in salt water and fresh water. Burning and itching symptoms may get worse with more exposure.
Viral gastroenteritis: Watery diarrhea and vomiting caused by a number of viruses, such as Norwalk virus. May be spread by swallowing water contaminated by infected individuals.

Gross, gross, gross. I know that a certain amount of gross is going to come with lake swimming anywhere, or even swimming pool swimming, but the warm climate in Florida and the stagnation of the water due to drought make that water super gross and very dangerous.

Side note: I've also had the pleasure of watching two different people get sick into the lakes after partying too hard during my days at the college program. With all those people milling around, I think the stats on people-contributions to the lake have got to be pretty foul.

So, please (for my sake) stay out of the lakes at Walt Disney World. There are lots of things you can do with the amazing swimming pools or the water parks if you're looking to add a little watery fun to your wedding celebration or honeymoon. Unless you're actually on fire, there's nothing that's so important that you need to get into one of those lakes.

Flowers crafted from colorful tissue or crepe paper are graceful, inexpensive to make, and always in season. Arrange them on tables, use as boutonnieres, or create a whole bouquet.

How to Make a Tissue Bubble Flower:

Attach 12 (or 6 pairs) artificial stamens to 24-gauge cloth-covered floral wire by wrapping with green floral tape.
Cut five 4-by-2 1/4-inch pieces of tissue paper.
For each petal, wrap tissue halfway around 1 1/2-inch Styrofoam ball; twist ends, and remove ball. Attach one end of petal to the base of stamen with floral tape.
Add the other petals one at a time, taping in place. Trim pointy ends.
Gently pull petals away from the center.

I get some unusual questions on facebook, email, the phone and twitter………… but this question had me really smiling “what advice do you give to a couple getting married?” I am such a fan of peace and calm in my own home, that I sometimes realize that my husband and I speak the languages that are loving each other the way that is needed. Bridal Guide

Stay away from the smoke. "Stay away from old-fashioned smoke machines on the dance floor—humidity can cause people to slip and fall," says Samantha Goldberg, owner of Gold Events Planning, in Bridgewater, New Jersey.
Stay wired. "DJ missing? Have your iPod & connection wires just in case," suggests Sasha V. Souza, a California-based event planner.
Prevent alcohol-induced problems. "Ask the bartender to short pour any relatives that may imbibe too much," says Souza.
Beware of cake colors. "If you think your groom is going to smash that cake in your face, make sure your icing doesn't have a lot of color in it" warns says Kathi R. Evans, event coordinator for All the Best Weddings and Celebrations, based in Toms River, New Jersey. "It could stain your dress to the point where even Shout wipes won't get it out." BUT IT IS A NO-NO!!!!
Avoid allergic reactions. "Make sure to fill bathroom baskets with Benadryl if you're serving any kind of fish or shellfish or nuts," said Goldberg.
Map it out. "Make sure you know where you are going to get your hair done if you are in an unfamiliar city and are using a salon that you don't know," warns Lonna Ponce of Ponce's Portraits based in Sacramento Valley, Calif.
Protect your feet."Bring a comfortable pair of flats to store under your seat at the reception," says Evans. "Once your first dances are over you can change shoes and no one will be the wiser."
Freeze out frizz. "Frizzy hair can be a real problem in humid weather," adds Ponce. "Don't panic. A trial run before your wedding day will eliminate most surprises, but can't ensure perfect weather. To get hair smooth, simply apply an anti-humectant (anti-wetness) product. If the rain or humidity causes your hair to droop, for an emergency fix, use a volumizer spray at the roots," says Judy Lewis of hudsonvalleyweddings.com.
Keep ‘em clean "Keeping white bridal shoes white through rain, mud, slush and on grass, can be tricky," says Ponce. "The solution is to take two medium-to-large sized "baggies" and split them front and in back for easy walking. Put about two inches of Scotch tape in front and back so the plastic bags won't slip off. The maid of honor can easily slip the "bootie-baggies" on and off over the bride's shoes . . . and the bride needn't even bend over!
Get Coverage. "With the price tag of weddings so high, couples are opting for wedding insurance, says Ponce. "Coverage varies with different companies, but can include such things as bad weather, wedding professional no-shows, the bride or groom getting sick and can extend to damaged property and gifts. The price also varies, but runs in the vicinity of 1% of the total cost for the wedding."
Prepare for seat snafus. "In order to avoid complications with having to seat "surprise" unconfirmed guests, or those who might have been left out of the table assignment report by mistake, always have a pair of extra chairs with place-settings at several tables," suggests says Haydee Randa of A Date To Remember Events, LLC, based in Naples, FL.
Order extras. "With boutonnières, always order at least one more of each," says Evans. "It is inevitable that you will forget to order a boutonnière for a valued family member or member of the wedding party."
Avoid flaccid flowers. "Stay away from flowers that require water as some flowers that are not in water won't last," says Goldberg. "For instance, hydrangeas have to be in water until one hour before ceremony."
Back-it-up! "Have a back-up CD of all your chosen songs," suggests Goldberg.
See it sparkle. "Ask the limousine company if their car will be freshly washed that day," suggests Christopher Kight of Christopher Kight Photography, based in Sacramento, California.

10 #Wedding question you NEVER thought to ask!

Love this article over at TheKnot and shared by The Bridal Party. Each question is 100% valid and should be paid attention to (especially #4). Definitely worth the read, so I thought I'd share:

After a few months of wedding planning, you start to feel like a pro. You've already memorized all the in-season flowers, can name the top 20 wedding dress designers alphabetically and are on a first-name basis with every single member on staff at your reception venue. Still, there's bound to be a couple of questions that you forgot to ask. Let us help fill it in for you.

1. When should I take off my veil after the ceremony?

Everyone loves to talk about the veil, but nobody tells you exactly when to ditch it. While it's perfectly okay to wear the veil for the entire reception, there are two optimal times to take it off. The first is after the ceremony (have your hairstylist show a bridesmaid how to do this without messing up your 'do), and the second is after the first dance while your guests are eating. Once the veil's off, stick it in your bridal suite or have it "decorate" your chair.

2. How should our wedding party travel to the reception?

We bet you and your groom planned a perfect ceremony exit where you hop into a vintage Rolls-Royce and ride off to the reception. That sounds great, but yes, you're responsible for getting your wedding party there too. If you're going casual and want them to simply drive over, let everyone know this beforehand so they can carpool. Otherwise, rent a stretch limo, go vintage with a trolley or let them be kids again by cruising in a budget-friendly school bus -- of course, feel free to tag along for the ride!

3. Do I really need someone to hold my dress while I pee?

This depends on the dress. If you're wearing a full-length ball gown, you'll probably need an extra set of hands to help hold up the skirt while you do your thing. Trust us -- the cost versus the benefit on this is a no-brainer. But if you're sporting a silk sheath and a posse pee makes you cringe, go ahead and handle your own business. Another tip: There's a pee-ready Spanx designed with a hole in, well, just the right place. We'll stay classy and resist the oh-so-obvious dirty joke opportunity here.

4. Is there an appropriate way to kiss at the ceremony?

Remember the day he proposed, and you saw the ring and the tears in his eyes, and then you two started making out like maniacs? Yeah, don't do that. But your first kiss as a married couple doesn't have to be just a peck either. Do what comes naturally, as long as it doesn't involve visible tongue and last more than 10 seconds. Oh, and don't do the dip thing either -- unless of course you want to look like you belong in a Hugh Grant movie.

5. What exactly do the bride and groom do during the cake cutting?

The cake cutting typically takes place after dinner when your bandleader or DJ makes an announcement (you can also do this). If you have older guests who might be leaving early, do your cake cutting at the beginning of the reception just before the first dance. For the first cut, your groom's hands are placed over yours as you cut into the bottom layer of the cake. The groom makes the second cut solo and feeds the bride, and then it's your turn.

6. Where do I put my engagement ring during the ceremony?

Wear the ring on your right hand or have your aunt or grandma hold it. If you want to wear your engagement ring for the reception, put it on during the ride to your venue or just before being announced. For Jewish weddings, it's fine to wear your engagement ring, and then exchange stone-free wedding bands if you want to keep with tradition. Also remember: The band is usually worn closest to your heart on your left hand.

7. Who lifts my veil?

While more and more brides are wearing a veil flipped back for the entire ceremony or not wearing one at all, the most traditional bride still wears a veil over her face. If you like to keep things classic, there are two options. One is your dad lifts the veil when he gives you away, "revealing" you to the groom (like you really need help with that one). The other is for the groom to lift the veil just before the kiss.

8. What side are we supposed to stand on during the ceremony?

If you're in a church facing the altar, the bride stands on the left side and the groom on the right. Guests of the bride and groom should follow suit, sitting on the side of whoever they know best or are related to (hint: tell mutual friends to sit on the side that has less people). For Jewish ceremonies, it's the opposite.

9. What's the best way to greet guests if I don't want a receiving line?

Yeah, we get it -- you don't want to stand around after the ceremony in an assembly line. Instead, greet your guests during the reception by going from table to table during the first course. Just make sure you have time to eat too! Also, make a short speech thanking guests for coming and give a shout-out to vendors and parents (or anyone else who helped pay for your wedding!). While this moment with the mic shouldn't take the place of personal interaction with guests, it can be a great forum to let them know how much their support means to you.

10. Can I take my shoes off at any time during the reception?

We've all been to the wedding where guests cut loose on the dance floor and ditch the heels. But it's a little different when you're the bride -- especially if you're wearing a formal dress. Instead of going barefoot, bring a pair of flats for dancing. If you're getting married in the summer, have baskets of flip-flops in your wedding colors for your guests to slip into before they get down. There's one exception to the shoes-or-lose rule: beach weddings!

Ribbon wands!!!

Tired of birdseed and bubbles…………. Everybody might be using sparklers (which are still awesome for photos at night!!!) Here is another option with great spirit and photo op potential………Ribbon wands are a fun way to celebrate the newlyweds. Ribbon wands are perfect for any occasion, especially weddings where no noise makers or rice is able to be thrown. Since throwing rice is out of the question…throw some colors around, and create a wedding keepsake at the same time! They are a simple yet beautiful item that adds flair and fun to any wedding. You can create and personalize your own ribbon wands using simple craft supplies such as ribbon and wooden dowel rods. Ribbon wands can be personalized by using the wedding colors as a palette. You can use play with different ribbon widths, patterns, and material of ribbon to add a fun unique look. You can also add flowers, feathers, and other embellishments to add more detail and reflect your wedding style.

Things you need:
Approx. 20 yards Of Ribbon (color of your choice)
Wooden Dowel Rods
Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint (color of your choice; optional)
Mod Podge (optional)
Double Sided Tape (optional)
Scrapbooking Paper (optional)

Things to do:
1. First thing is to decide whether you want to paint the dowel rods or leave as is. You can paint the dowel rods in a color of your choice or leave them as they are; a natural light wood. We recommend painting the dowel rods white, black, silver, or chocolate brown. Then you can play with ribbon strands for accent colors. Now you may be tempted to try spray painting the dowels but the color doesn’t usually apply evenly. So take your time to hand paint the rods and it will be well worth it when they are finished. You can also even try decoupaging pretty paper onto the dowel rods as well using ModPodge
2. If you want to use several different strips of ribbon, simply cut several lengths of ribbon of varied colors, materials, and widths. Tie the ribbons in a knot around the end of the wooden dowel rod. If you are more of a minimalist, you can stick with one strand of ribbon. Cut you ribbon strands into 12″ pieces and stick a strip of double sides tape at each end of your ribbons. Then carefully wrap the ribbon around the top of the dowel rod. If you are comfortable using a hot glue gun you can use that instead of the tape (Personally I am not so good with the hot glue. I tend to glue things to the table and burn myself).
3. You are basically finished. Feel free to play with embellishments such as feathers, rhinestones, or even little flowers to add some personality to your wands. Display your ribbon wands in a large glass vase, fill with sand, pearls, stones, or glass marbles and simply place your wands in the vase. Voila!

Engaged? This is the most exciting time for you and your fiancé, but that initial thrill of engagement and planning can sometimes put unrealistic visions into our heads. How to make it all come together is quite a challenge for the “first-timer.” I have had brides contact me recently, unsure of what a planner can really do for them and often insisting that their moms have tons of free time and will be with them every step of the way. All that is great! It’s definitely awesome to have your mom largely involved in the planning process and on the big day. She should be after all, she’s your Mom! And she’s only been waiting for this day…well probably longer than you have, right?

Precisely my point here! She’s your Mom and she already plays a HUGE role in your wedding day. There is no reason you should put her in charge of all the planning or coordinating the details, especially for the day of. (Psst, now if your mom is a planner – more power to you but I would guarantee that SHE hired a coordinator, lol)

Are you wondering why I stress the importance of this? If so, here are three reasons for you!

She’s emotionally (& financially) attached. Ever heard of a momzilla? Sounds made-up, right? Wrong! She’s real and she could just be YOUR mom one day (trust me; even the calmest Mom’s have it in them on wedding weekend!) Remember when I said your mom may have been waiting for this day longer than you have? She has a vision in her mind (and MY Mother had a TOTALLY different vision of MY big day!!!) That’s just another reason for her attachment to grow and sometimes interfere, which can have a huge impact on how your day plays out. A planner is typically a neutral third party, there to help smooth things over, help you make the best decision and play devil’s advocate when you need one the most (and at times, help you PUSH to get what YOU want!)
She Needs/Wants to Enjoy the Day Too. This goes almost without saying. “Don’t forget the person that is helping you with everything is also attending your wedding and not everyone wants to be running around making sure everything’s perfect, they want to be able to enjoy the wedding and party as well.” Couldn’t have said it better myself, so please take note and remember that your mom might actually want to…ENJOY your day with you! So let her, and best of all let her relax!
She Just Won’t Think of Everything. If your mom isn’t a wedding planner, this might not be the best time for her to learn on your big day. If she is, well you should still check with her to see if she wants to be in charge of everything, or anything for that matter (see number 2). For most girls, however, your mom is not a planner and therefore may not think of every single detail that needs to be done for that SPECIAL day. Planners put a lot of time and effort mapping out a schedule for your day, sometimes down to the minute by minute details. If you have seen a planner’s schedule, shoot me an email and I can show you what I mean!

Bottom line, if you’re looking for someone to help plan your big day, Mother’s are good option but a professional planner may just be the way to go. Your mom should play just as big a role in your wedding day as you would like! And I know depending on money, it may not be your choice, but when push comes to shove remember that it’s your day! Mom will love you no matter what…and nine times out of ten, as long as she can share the day WITH you, I think she’ll be more than happy (AND SO WILL YOU!)

Think about it. Lighting has always been used to "set the mood", so why not set the mood for your guests? Turn your venue from drab to fab by lighting several candles all around, sticking different color lights in the corners of the room, under tables, inside centerpieces or by replacing bulbs with black lights! Whoa.

Talk to your venue or wedding planner and discuss different options for lighting to achieve the look you want. Instead of spending a ton of money on flowers and wedding decor, save your dough and switch out some bulbs. Could it be so easy? You'll never know unless you ask, right? There are so many wedding customs and traditions, but are they all must-dos? Of course not! A couple may decide to pass on a wedding custom or tradition for a number of reasons. For one, many couples’ weddings are getting pared down due in hopes of saving money. Some traditional aspects may fall by the wayside as couples seek to make their weddings more personal. Or, they may just find some customs silly.

Just remember that when you skip certain wedding customs, you will have a few guests who are surprised and may question your decision. Be prepared to answer to them! But here are a few traditions you have WedSpace’s permission to do without:

~ Favors: Unless the gift is immediately edible, many favors will get left behind. Skipping favors such as candles, CDs, and mini photo frames can save you hundreds of dollars and most guests won’t miss them anyway. If you want to give something, tell guests they can take home their table centerpieces as favors if they like.

~ Tossing the Bouquet: A recent bride on WedSpace.com commented that she really wanted to skip the bouquet toss at her upcoming wedding; at a friend’s wedding, the ladies were practically being dragged out onto the floor and she didn’t want to embarrass her single female friends. Truthfully, many female guests say they duck into the bathroom during the bouquet toss. Plus, if you don’t do it, you’ll save money on purchasing the second “tossing bouquet.” The same can be said for the garter toss; grooms may want to skip that custom for same reasons.

~ Dollar Dance: I find this tradition — where the bride dances with guests in exchange for a dollar or more toward the honeymoon — a bit outdated. OK, truthfully, I think it’s cheesy. This was popular during eras past when young brides and grooms didn’t have much money. Modernly, couples are more financially stable, as they get married later in life. Set up a honeymoon registry to allow guests to help fund the honeymoon and skip the Dollar Dance.

~ Receiving Line: The Receiving Line is a wedding custom that many couples choose to skip. It’s very formal and often means that guests (and the bride and groom!) end up standing around for a long time, instead of enjoying the reception. Instead of a Receiving Line, the couple can simply make a stop at each guest table to say hello and thank people who have traveled to the wedding.

~ Saving the Cake Top: Who wants to eat stale, freezer-burned cake a year after their wedding? Many couples won’t mind passing on this custom. Additionally, it is increasingly popular to serve cupcakes, mini pies, or a dessert buffet instead of a traditional cake, so some couples won’t have a cake top to save for their anniversary. Instead of saving the cake top, register for a rare bottle of champagne and celebrate with that on your first anniversary.

1. Select your bridal party and request their participation in your special day.

2. Interview and Hire the following: Don't forget that not all of these service providers will be available on your wedding day, so be sure to have more than one to consider

3. Wedding officiant. This can be a religious or civil person depending on your beliefs and preference.

4. Reception Caterer. if your reception site does not provide one, you will need to arrange for your own. Once you have found one that appeals to you be sure to secure your date with a signed contract and a security deposit. As always, be comfortable with your selection, and know the refund/cancellation policies in the event you cancel or change your date.

5. Photographer and Videographer. If your budget allows for it, hire a professional. There will only be one chance to get this right.

Every dress needs alterations as not one woman is the same shape, so it will always take a few weeks to get everything perfect. When you try out or purchase your dress from the stockist, you will probably have at least two or three fittings or more may be necessary, all of which you will have to schedule with them. You may have to leave ample time for all these, before the wedding.

A bride’s first dress fitting usually takes place about six weeks before her wedding day. It is a good idea to bring one like-minded friend or family member along with you when you go for the first fitting. You have to decide which accessories you want to wear with the dress, and buy or order them so you can bring them along and see how everything looks together.

First fitting:

At the first fitting there are two main things for the bride to ensure: that the gown is the right size, colour, and design, ie. neckline, train, sleeves and the seamstress (who helps the bride get into the gown) knows what she is doing - where the dress needs to be taken in, let out, shortened, lengthened or otherwise altered.

While the seamstress is busy fitting your wedding dress, take a close look at the way the material falls, how the waist feels, the chest area fits, and so on. Speak up if you see anything you do not like as this is your time to be demanding. Remember, you are paying lots of money for this gown, and it is your privilege to have as many fittings as it takes to get the perfect fit. Schedule your next fitting before you leave the shop.

Second fitting:

This should take place about a month before your wedding. Bring along your foundation garments, bridal shoes, jewelry, and any accessories. If you are not quite sure which accessories to wear, bring along a camera as well, so you can see how each option looks with your dress. Also, make sure all your concerns from the first fitting have been addressed and fixed. Be sure whether the hem skims the tops of your wedding shoes. If there is a problem, continue to schedule fittings until you are completely satisfied.

Final fitting:

When you go for your final fitting, get your chief bridesmaid and mom to come along so they can learn about your dress. You also should find out how to get rid of last-minute wrinkles in your dress and what if you spill something on the gown.

When the day arrives to pick up your gown ( about two week before the wedding), try it on one last time, especially if it's been a while since your last fitting.

earTHly #Thursday- Paper Flower Escort Cards

Nella from www.lostmykitty.etsy.com has generously shared more of her creative DIY wisdom in the form of these delicate paper flowers to use as escort cards or name settings.

They are such a pretty decoration (and no flowers were killed in the making of this blog post, lol)

And over to Nella....

What you will need:

Craft paper 4” square
Fabric leaves 2”
Skeleton Leaves 2”
Adhesive Glue
Scissors
Needle and Thread

Instructions:
Step 1: Draw a spiral on a 4 inch square. I’ve used 90 weight paper purchased at Jarrold’s though regular coloured craft paper would work equally well.
Step 2: Cut out the spiral along the lines you’ve drawn. If you’re really clever, cut out the spiral freehand. It will keep you from hunting down an eraser as I forced my husband to do for me. Step 3: Roll the spiral from the outside. Step 4: Use a spot of adhesive to glue the body of the flower onto the round bit left. Now you’re finished with the flower! Step 5: Use a pencil to faintly write your guests’ names in a pretty cursive. I’ve used pen for emphasis and don’t forget the table number for escort cards.

Step 6: Follow the lines using small stitches. You could also use paper if you are not so keen on sewing. Step 7: Attach the skeleton leaf and your personalised leaf to the flower. Martha Stewart may be able to make 100 of these in 15 minutes but for us mere mortals make a party of it with a bottle of champagne and a few friends – nothing like the promise of food and a mimosa to corale some slave labour - or you can always contact me through Etsy (Nella, www.lostmykitty.etsy.com).

* Sudden severe weather prevents your celebration, or causes many of your guests to cancel.

If You Clink That Glass I’ll Take It Away From You

Don't you dare think about clinking those champagne glasses

Two things can happen if you clink your glass long and hard enough at a wedding reception. The bride and groom will kiss, or the glass will break. I don’t know about you, but I HATE glass clinking, I mean I cannot even put into words how much I detest this cliché of a tradition. Luckily, a lot of my clients feel the same way and are looking into new ideas for the old kissing game thing.

There are tons of options out there but I’m going to give you the three that I like the best. If none of these get you going, feel free to hit the ‘net and look for alternatives to the clinking of glasses

This Is How We Do It

At our wedding, we pre-selected a bunch of married couples (letting them know ahead of time of course) and called upon them to show the us how it’s done. They would kiss and then my wife and I had to mimic that kiss. It started out pretty simple but as the dinner and speeches progressed and the wine took effect, we had some pretty crazy stuff going on. I suggest spacing out the kissing and having your MC announce the couple, introduce them and then have them kiss. Also, let them know to keep it PG-13 tops, you may have kids there and they don’t need to see your Uncle go all 9 ½ weeks on his wife!

Are You Questioning Me?

Another alternative to the dreaded glass clinking can be asking the couple questions related to their life together so far or questions in general. You can certainly ask trivial pursuit questions, but get a few different editions, add in some cool ones, Lord of the Rings, Movie stuff, Music stuff and the original version as well. If the couple gets the answer
right, they are in the clear, if they answer wrong…It’s kissin’ time! I love when relatives and friends get up to the mic, introduce themselves and ask one of the couple a question about the other. These questions can be from their childhood, the time they were dating etc. No questions about how many people the other person has slept with or dated, keep it specifically to the couple. I had a grandfather get up and ask the bride what kind of sandwich the groom used to make every day when he came home from school…and she got it right!!!

Dance Rummy, Dance!

My final suggestion to spare your glassware is this…there is always a dance floor at a wedding, so let’s use it shall we? Sure it gets used later in the night but let’s get people out there sooner. Have the DJ bring a cordless mic (most include this anyway) Have the MC announce that glass clinking will get you nowhere and if you want the couple to kiss you have these options, you can take to the dance floor and show the couple a few fancy moves, you can sing them a love song or you can share a memory you have of the couple (content appropriate of course) What’s great is you can have the videographer record all this and it makes a great addition to the wedding video. At the end of each performance, he couple has to kiss and the glassware is still intact.
Gutsy Groom Advice

Some traditions are great, “You may now kiss the bride” should certainly be included in your wedding. But clinking glasses, I don’t think so. The only traditions you should be concerned about are the traditions you are going to start. Don’t include something in your wedding just because the websites or your family says that’s the way it is supposed to be. Don’t be afraid to start new traditions, add new ideas into your wedding. As long as you like them, it’s all good. It is your wedding day after all. I pride myself on working with my couples to get everything they want added into the special day and make sure it is a combination of their personalities and the things they want to bring into the wedding.
You want your guests walking away from your wedding saying how great and original it was and then next year they will be comparing everyone else’s wedding to yours. And we can make that happen for you.

Choosing a ceremony officiant for your big day can be a daunting task. If you are getting married in your church or synagogue, the decision is simple.--you take what they give you, usually. But maybe you don't belong to a church yet want a heartfelt ceremony that expresses your personal beliefs. If you are like many brides- and grooms-to-be, you are looking for creative alternatives to the traditional cookie-cutter ceremony.
You deserve to have your ceremony be like no other and to develop a warm and personal relationship with your officiant. With the popularity of out-of-church-weddings, many people are hanging out their shingles calling themselves "wedding officiants". Beware, for you don't want an amateur handling this aspect of your big day. If the florist or photographer doesn't show, it is unfortunate, but the day can go on. If your officiant doesn't show--you've got BIG trouble. Ask some of your recently married friends for recommendations. Or, type in the name of your state or city followed by wedding officiant (e.g. Colorado wedding officiant) into a search engine and you'll get a bunch of hits. Look for someone with an established presence, who issues contracts and has a fairly sophisticated website. These are good clues that the person or business is stable and will be around for your big day. Then follow these guidelines when you meet with a prospective celebrant.
1. When you meet with him or her (or chat on the phone) do they exude a calming presence? Does their energy fit in with what you are seeking for your ceremony? Do they come across as being passionate about performing weddings? Are they interested in hearing your story? If you find yourself smiling, or nodding in agreement as the officiant speaks to you, that's a good indication that your wedding ceremony will be one that you will happily remember for many years.
2. Will he or she help you to craft a ceremony without restrictions--including all of your ideas?
3. Are they thorough and easy to understand in explaining the ceremony-writing process to you? Are you clear on how it all works, the booking procedure, how many meetings you will have together, time lines, etc? You will want an officiant who explains things easily and clearly so there will be no confusion on your wedding day. Does the officiant view your wedding ceremony as the heart of your wedding day--a celebration as opposed to merely a prescribed ritual?
4. Does the officiant honor all spiritual beliefs (or lack thereof) and view their primary role as that of facilitator of your ceremony?
5. Is he or she adventurous of spirit and willing to try unconventional things? Ask them to recount an example or two of creative touches they have incorporated into ceremonies
6. Is he or she a proficient writer and a dynamic speaker? Is their speaking voice pleasing to the ear and free from pauses, "ums" and irritating phrases such as "you know," "like," and "OK."
7. Is the officiant a one-man/woman show or is he or she part of a group? If they are solo, do they have a backup in case of an emergency?
8. Do they offer more than one level of service in order to accommodate your needs and budget or is it "one size fits all?"
9. Do they have a wealth of written options for you to include in your ceremony?
10. What are their pre-marital counseling requirements, if any?
11. Is their fee in writing? What extra charges, if any, could possibly apply over and above the original fee? Are the payment terms reasonable to you?
12. Is there pressure to upgrade to a more expensive level of service (perhaps including things you don't need)? Do they try to get you to book on the spot, telling you that they may not be available for your date unless you book immediately? Or do they give you the opportunity to go home, discuss it and get back to them?
13. Is he or she a professional wedding ceremony officiant, or is officiating ceremonies his or her sideline business? Are they ceremony experts or do they divert their attention to other wedding services? You don't want your officiant also serving as your DJ or your bartender, do you?
14. How long have they been in business? Do they have a written contract? What are the contract terms?
15. Is he or she willing to give you the benefit of his or her experience of what has worked and not worked in the past, and then leave the final decision up to you?
16. Are they knowledgeable about their state's marriage license procedures and do they advise you on the process of obtaining your license?
17. Most of all, what does your gut tell you when you talk with this person? If it feels right, then you've probably found the best fit for you.
18. Ask your wedding coordinator. We have worked with most officiants and can assist you in finding the officiant that matches your style.
