#earTHly #Thursday- #TopChef Gail Simmons on #Eco-Friendly #Weddings

Gail Simmons spoke about weddings and her inspirational ideas. Although she may not come across as a green goddess when she's judging Top Chef, she's actually very eco-conscious. Having an environmentally friendly wedding was very important to her and her now-husband, Jeremy. Here are a few highlights:

* Send a save the date email. Instead of sending formal save the date cards, Gail chose to save paper. She let her loved ones know when and where her wedding would take place through a short, but sweet email.
* Cut back on the invite. Gail examined every aspect of the invite and asked herself where she could use less paper. "I've never understood why wedding invites come with two envelopes. What is that second envelope for? Why is it necessary?" She ditched the extra envelope and sent information on hotels and lodging to only out-of-town guests.
* Use recycled paper. This is a no-brainer! Gail printed all of her wedding stationary on regular sized, 100-percent recycled paper.
* Don't waste the flowers. "Flowers are such a big thing, but they are wasteful. They cost so much money, are on a table for a couple of hours, and then what?" Gail came up with a clever way to lengthen the life of her wedding flowers. While she and her guests were dancing the night away, her wedding planner gathered the vases and wrapped each bouquet in craft paper. When her friends and family left the wedding, they were given a bouquet of fresh flowers to take home!
* Give an eco favor. Gail's wedding favor was a reusable farmers market tote bag. "My friends still use them to this day."

#Weddings- what is making a comeback?

They say if you wait long enough, everything comes back into style. This holds true even with weddings — though thankfully, we've sidestepped a rerun of Di-style puffy sleeves!

Read on to learn which once-discarded wedding trends have come back into style. Who knows, you might even find some of these playing a charming act two in your own wedding.

Romantic Retreads

Bridal gown fashion follows cycles, just like any other type. A few years ago, most high-end gowns were streamlined, minimalist creations crafted from fabrics like silk mikado or satin. But these days, brides are craving a little more frivolity, so one of the biggest bygones to stake out fresh territory is the tulle skirt.

Tulle skirts — incredibly popular for years — had fallen by the wayside, being deemed too "bridey" ... even a tad tacky. But not anymore! These days, a flood of tulle is issuing from virtually all the top ateliers. So if you always loved tulle's lighter-than-air look, you're in luck.

Contemporary wedding gowns

Here's another bridal gown trend that's come back into vogue: less sparkle, and more artistically-worked fabric. Sure, you'll still find plenty of ballgowns with heavy silver embroidery and rhinestone beading, but today's gowns are trending elsewhere.

Instead, designers are turning to details like ruffles, fabric flowers and pleating to make a statement. A fitting complement to the softer feeling of today's bridal gowns is lustrous pearl jewelry, either classic or contemporary, depending on the cut of the gown.

A Commendably Tasty Trend

buttercream cakesAnother notable trend making a comeback (and not a minute too soon): the buttercream wedding cake.

After years of folded, quilted, cement-like fondant, brides are tilting back toward the traditional buttercream, which actually looks like, well, frosting.

Another plus: buttercream is miles tastier, and easier on the budget. The classic buttercream cake looks simply elegant topped with beautiful fresh flowers, or even a vintage bride and groom cake topper.

Seating Styles

When it comes to weddings, even table shapes wink in and out of fashion. You've doubtless noticed that round tables for 8-10 guests have fallen from favor. So what's the new "it" table? Those long, rectangular tables of yore.

Of course, not everything has swung back to the past; today's rectangular tables are likely to prop up some very contemporary centerpieces. Try alternating high and low floral arrangements to keep your tables fresh and interesting.

Favor Fashions

Even wedding favors see trends come and go. For a time, it was keepsake-style favors like silver picture frames that were all the rage. Now the pendulum has swung back to edible. Whether it's an elegant pair of truffles or a mini-jar filled with jam you made with your own two hands, guests always appreciate a tasty favor.

The newfound popularity of these cast-aside trends just goes to show: even if it takes a leave of absence, a good idea will always find its place. So use some of these "re-trends" to enhance your wedding, if you like. After all, that's what weddings have always been about: blending timeless traditions with modern sensibilities.

#Wedding #Wear #Wednesday Veromia Gowns - can you say #WOW

Jason Jennings is 35 and has been designing bridal, bridesmaid and evening gowns for many years. After graduating from The London School of Fashion in 1995 he went on to gain his BA Honours at Central St Martins in 1997.

Jason then went to work for David Feilden where he stayed for 8 years honing his talent for designing gorgeous gowns whilst also teaching at The London School of Fashion and Central St Martins.

Jason understands how a woman should look, and pulls this into his designs, creating a well fitting sexy yet feminine look to all the labels he designs for VEROMIA.

Jason Jennings has introduced with this lovely vision of a wedding dress – absolutely exquisite. This would be an inspired choice for any bride who doesn’t want white, and the combination of brown and pink (which sounds really quite foul – “Yes, I’m getting married in brown and pink”…!, but in this dress is simply gorgeous) would suit a lot of different complexions.

#Tasty #Tuesday- Out of the Box for the Sassy hostess!

I love Coppola wine and have vivid memories of the vineyard tours while living in CA. Now this POP of color is an amazing addition to any event table.

I love the description "For a multitude of moods, enjoy a single serving of Sofia Mini Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine. A distinctive blend as unconventional as the woman who inspired it, Mini is for the impromptu, impetuous, live-passionately-for-the-moment kind of person. The kind who lives like there is no tomorrow!
Why go the usual route to champagne (or in this case Sparkling wine, wink wink).......... Integrate these adorable containers into your tablescape and bring something unique to the table.

earTHly #Thursday- "Locally Farmed Food and the 100-Mile Diet"

Locally Farmed Food and the 100-Mile Diet

While many consumers choose organic produce to be more eco-friendly, others believe it's better for both the environment and community to buy food that is locally grown. Big Organic industrial farms help deliver low-priced produce to a larger population, but the food is often shipped long distances before it reaches supermarkets. On the other hand, local produce is grown within a community and travels only short distances to reach consumers.

Local food is not necessarily organic, nor is it required to meet federal organic standards. However, many local farmers have environmental goals similar to those of organic farmers. And because local farming is just that -- local -- consumers also have the opportunity to ask farmers about agricultural practices. Many local farmers actually encourage questions from customers.

One way to learn about local farming is to find out where to purchase fresh produce. There are over 4,000 farmers' markets currently open in the United States -- an 18 percent increase from 2004 [source: AMS at USDA]. Farmers' markets are usually outdoor venues where local farmers can sell their produce directly to customers and discus agricultural methods. Farmers' markets usually stipulate that farmers sell only products that they themselves grow or produce.

People are also beginning to think about food in new ways. Grassroots food movements like the 100-mile diet and slow food may end up changing the way we eat. The 100-mile diet encourages eating foods grown within only a 100-mile radius of where you live. While the diet is strict and requires research to find reliable venues for staples and specialty items, proponents believe it exposes followers to the bounty of local food and may even encourage gardening. And because there is no hard rule on how far local foods can travel and still be considered local, the 100-mile diet helps locavores, or people who eat local food, define their territory.

Slow food is a non-profit organization with 170 chapters across the United States and 80,000 members worldwide. The movement encourages slowing down and enjoying food, family and community instead of hitting the drive-thru for take-out. The slow food movement compliments the local farming movement because it promotes taking the time to taste your food and know where it comes from. The movement favors both local and organics. It encourages environmentalism, including limited use of pesticides and earth-friendly farming methods but is not opposed to genetically modified foods so long as they are clearly labeled.

So here is an option, visit the local farmers market and see how you can improve your diet.

earTHly #Thursday- Baby It's Cold Outside

Button Up Your Home

Baby It's Cold Outside!

As the seasons begin to change your family migrates indoors for the winter, a lot of energy can be wasted to keep your family and your home comfortable. Between 40 and 70% of all home energy is wasted, but we could save about half of that by buying efficient appliances and taking energy-saving measures.

The 10 Biggest Energy Users

  • Water heaters
  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
  • Air conditioners
  • Ranges
  • Clothes washers
  • Clothes dryers
  • Dishwashers

  • Portable heaters
  • Lights

  • High_perf_home

And here are some inexpensive solutions to consider:

Cover your air conditioner: If you can’t remove your window unit, consider covering it both inside and out. Besides protecting your air-conditioning unit, these covers also help keep cold air from entering your home through the space around the air-conditioner, cutting heating costs.

Caulk it: Small spaces and gaps around windows and pipes and wires entering the home create create energy wasting drafts that can cut the efficiency of your heating system. Most caulking products cost under $10; rope caulk, one of the easiest types to apply, sells for about $4 for 40 or 50 feet.

Block drafts: Draft blockers are foam plates that fit behind light switches and electrical outlets to reduce drafts that enter through those spaces. You can get a packet of 10 for about $3 and they're easy to install with just a screwdriver.

Install heat reflectors: These are thin sheets that fit behind radiators, to reflect heat away from the wall and into the room, thereby maximizing each radiator’s efficiency.

Upgrade your thermostat: Changing your thermostat to a programmable one allows you to control the temperature in your home at different times of the day without you being home. Keep the heat off when you're out of the house and set it to turn back up before you get home. Some also have a second set of settings for weekends, when people usually spend more time at home. The thermostats range from $90 to $175, but can save 12% or more on your energy bill and pay for itself within three years.

Reflective Window Film: Place these thin, plastic sheets directly on the inside of window panes and glass doors. The film reflects inside heat back into your home, reducing the amount that is conducted outside through windows. The film costs about $10 a window and is easy to put on -- it adheres to the window directly, or with the help of water from a spray bottle.

Storm Window Kits: It can be expensive to have storm windows installed throughout your house, but there is a less-expensive alternative. Storm window kits consist of plastic film or sheets to cover the window. Attaching the plastic is done with tape or tacks. Prices range from about $3 to $10 per window.

Weatherstripping: Create a tight seal around all your windows to reduce heated and cooled air from escaping outside. Weatherstrips are plastic, foam, felt or rubber strips that fit around window and door frames with a self-adhesive backing. Prices vary, but average about $5 per window or door.

Good tips especially the reflective window tint. I've never heard of using it for conserving heat but I like the idea. It's definitely worth considering.
